State of Appalachia performs Americana / Bluegrass cover songs as well as originals. The band consists of Adam Christy on acoustic guitar & vocals, Gary Vann on banjo & Fiddle, Maree Fargo on double bass & vocals & Paul Redfern on Fiddle.
The band "State of Appalachia" was originally put together out of a love for Appalachian music. Using the word Appalachia as widely as possible so as to encompass various genres of music from old timey & bluegrass to country rock and blues. Many of todays American music genres have originated from the Appalachian region of the United States. It is this music in all of its forms and variations that we embrace. We are a cover band that is also venturing into song writing of our own based around this concept.
State of Appalachia as a band name could be taken to mean many different things. It has been written that America at one point had considered using the name for the uniting of the states. If this had eventuated they would have been known as the United States of Appalachia. Using this as a band name creates a reference to this, similar to the link between America and Americana music. The word “state” can also be used as in the context “state of or condition of things”. American music has changed dramatically over time and despite the changes many things have stayed relatively the same, bluegrass in particular is a great example of this. Many new artists and bands (like The Steeldrivers, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers & Colter Wall to name a few) are emerging in the current American music scene who are embracing these roots and enlivening the richness of its history, creating a very welcomed return to Appalachian style music. Our band, State of Appalachia, seeks to embrace this shift by covering some of this music and bringing it to our part of the world, showing off the current “state” of Appalachian music.
This is very much a work in progress especially in the area of songwriting. We welcome you and invite you to stay connected with us as we venture along this journey into a bygone era and back again.
